The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo has confirmed the safe return of seminarian Kelvin Ochai, who was abducted on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Asa III in Otukpo, Benue State. According to the Diocese, he escaped from his abductors on the evening of Friday, July 31, and safely reached Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area, where he received assistance before reuniting with his family.

The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo has announced the safe return of seminarian Kelvin Ochai, bringing relief to members of the Diocese, his family, and well-wishers who had been praying for his release.

In a statement signed by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Diocese said Mr. Ochai escaped from the custody of his abductors on Friday evening, July 31, after being kidnapped on Wednesday, July 29, at Asa III in Otukpo, Benue State.

According to the statement, the seminarian made his way to Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was assisted before being safely reunited with his family. The Diocese said he returned unharmed.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, expressed gratitude to God for the seminarian's safe return and thanked priests, religious, lay faithful, and members of the public for their prayers and support throughout the period of the abduction.

The Bishop also acknowledged the assistance provided by Rev. Fr. Vitalis Ioryue, C.S.Sp., parishioners of SS. Peter and Paul's Parish, Aliade, and the Nigeria Police Force for the care and support offered to the seminarian after his escape.

While celebrating the positive outcome, the Diocese called for continued prayers for other victims still in captivity across Nigeria and appealed for lasting peace, justice, and improved security in the country.

Kelvin Ochai was reportedly abducted on July 29, 2026, at Asa III in Otukpo, Benue State. His abduction prompted prayers and expressions of concern within the Catholic community and beyond.
