A primary school teacher in Kogi State has died after she was allegedly beaten by the parent of a pupil she had disciplined, in an incident that has prompted a police homicide investigation and reignited national alarm over violence against educators in Nigeria. Maryam Usman, 30, was attacked at her school on June 18, 2026 and passed away seven days later — on June 25 — after her injuries proved fatal despite hospital treatment.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the death of Maryam Usman, a 30-year-old teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District, Olamaboro Local Government Area, following an assault allegedly carried out by the parent of a pupil she had disciplined.
According to the police, the attack took place on June 18, 2026, when a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, entered the school premises and assaulted the teacher. The command's spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed the incident to Benue Info-pedia on Sunday.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil." — ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, Kogi State Police Command
Usman sustained what the police described as severe injuries during the assault. She was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka but her condition worsened, leading to a referral to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical attention. She died on June 25, 2026 — exactly seven days after the attack.
The case of culpable homicide was formally reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25, the same day Usman died. Police officers subsequently visited the scene of the incident and the deceased's residence to conduct documentation. The body is to be conveyed to the General Hospital in Ankpa for a formal medical examination and autopsy.
All three suspects — Abdullahi Ishaka and the two women who accompanied him — fled the scene before police arrived. The command stated that efforts to apprehend them remain ongoing, and that once arrested, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
Prior to the official police confirmation, reports had circulated on social media, with Kogi Global Media publishing allegations that a female teacher had been beaten to death. The platform described the development as having far-reaching implications for Nigeria's education sector.
The tragedy has renewed widespread concern about the safety of teachers in Nigerian schools. Education professionals and civil society voices have long warned that growing confrontations between parents and school staff over disciplinary matters pose a serious threat — not just to individual educators, but to the integrity of school authority and the learning environment. The death of Maryam Usman now gives that warning its most devastating confirmation yet in Kogi State.
Benue Info-pedia will continue to follow this story as investigations develop. The identities and relationship of the two women accompanying the primary suspect have not been confirmed by police at the time of publication.
