A Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after suffering critical injuries in a Russian airstrike on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to graduate from Kharkiv National Medical University.
According to the university, the 23-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries when Russian forces launched an aerial bombing of the area on June 29, 2026. She initially received emergency treatment in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialist medical care.
Despite sustained efforts by medical personnel, Marian died on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
In a statement, Kharkiv National Medical University described her as a bright, hardworking and compassionate student who was committed to helping others.
The university said staff, students and medical teams had hoped for her recovery but were ultimately unable to save her life.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office also confirmed her death and extended condolences to her family and loved ones, noting that doctors fought to save her life until the very end.
Marian had been studying medicine at the university since 2020 and had completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye.
Reports indicate she was travelling with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred. Fatima reportedly died at the scene, while Marian sustained severe injuries.
Authorities said 12 other people were injured during the attack.
Her death highlights the continuing risks faced by civilians, including international students, as the war in Ukraine continues.
