The Benue State Executive Council has approved an agreement expected to unlock about ₦378 billion in investment for the proposed National Food City Project at Ogyoma Akpa in Otukpo Local Government Area.

The approval was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Solomon Iorpev, after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

According to the announcement, the National Food City will be developed as an integrated agricultural production and processing complex aimed at strengthening Benue's food sufficiency programme and moving the state's agricultural economy beyond the production and sale of raw commodities.

The proposed project is expected to cover more than 30,000 hectares of land and mobilise approximately 40,000 farmers who will supply commodities including rice, cassava, maize and livestock feed.

The facilities are planned to process agricultural produce into finished products for domestic consumption and export markets.

The investment agreement is structured to run for 25 years, after which the facility is expected to be handed over to the Benue State Government for full ownership.

The project is also projected to create more than 15,000 direct jobs, potentially providing employment opportunities within agricultural production, processing, logistics and related activities if the project is implemented as announced.

However, details on the identity of the private-sector investor or consortium, financing arrangements, implementation timeline and specific terms for farmer participation were not provided in the announcement available to Benue Info-pedia.

Water Sector Reform Also Gets Underway

In a related development, the Executive Council received an announcement concerning the unbundling of Benue State into SUB-WASH, a World Bank-assisted programme focused on reforming and expanding water supply and sanitation services.

The initiative is expected to improve access to clean and potable water while introducing reforms to existing laws governing the water and sanitation sector.

It is also designed to create greater opportunities for private-sector participation through public-private partnership arrangements.

A SUB-WASH team is already in Benue assessing the old and Greater Makurdi Water Works to determine opportunities for expansion. One of the proposed interventions is the extension of reticulation networks to new layouts within Makurdi.

Similar interventions are planned for the Katsina-Ala and Otobi water works as part of efforts to strengthen water infrastructure across the state.

For residents, the success of the reforms could have significant implications for households, businesses and communities that depend on reliable access to potable water.

What the Developments Could Mean for Benue

The two developments focus on sectors with direct economic and social importance to Benue: agriculture and water infrastructure.

If successfully implemented, the National Food City could provide a larger market for farmers while encouraging local processing and value addition.
