Otukpo, Benue State — The Otukpo Local Government Council has supported youths in Township Ward 1 with sanitation equipment reportedly valued at about ₦400,000, as part of efforts to strengthen community participation in environmental sanitation.

The intervention followed the participation of members of the Youth Alive Community Watch, Ward 1, in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held across the ward last Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Comrade Joshua Otene, the youths were involved in refuse evacuation, clearing of blocked gutters and drainage channels, cutting of overgrown vegetation and general environmental clean-up.

The Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, Hon. Prince Maxwell Ogiri, commended the youths for participating in the exercise.

Ogiri also praised the President of the group, Hon. Sunday Enokela Elagbudu, for his leadership, while commending the Otukpo Chief Health Officer, Comrade Sanitarian Bernard Oloche Alome, for supervising and coordinating the sanitation activities.

The equipment reportedly provided by the council includes wheelbarrows, rain boots, hand gloves, shovels, rakes, nose masks and other sanitation materials.

The council said the intervention was intended to encourage residents, particularly young people, to take greater responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Ogiri subsequently urged youths in other wards across Otukpo Local Government Area to emulate the Ward 1 initiative by participating in voluntary community service and supporting environmental sanitation activities.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Union of Mine Workers, Otukpo Chapter, Comrade Obande Moses Adah, commended the council chairman for supporting community-driven environmental initiatives.

Adah also praised the Ward 1 youths for what he described as their patriotism, cooperation and commitment to community development.

The Otukpo Local Government Council reiterated its appeal to residents to support environmental cleanliness initiatives across the area.

Why the development matters

Regular environmental sanitation can help communities address everyday problems such as indiscriminate refuse disposal, blocked drainage channels and overgrown public spaces.

The Ward 1 initiative also demonstrates how local authorities can work with organised community groups to improve neighbourhood cleanliness rather than relying solely on government sanitation personnel.

However, the sustainability of such interventions will depend on continued community participation, adequate sanitation infrastructure and proper waste-management systems.
