For many households, firewood remains an important source of cooking energy. But behind the familiar practice are questions about health, safety, the environment and the burden placed on families.
For Mercy Msenhemba Atsuku, the issue is personal.

Growing up in Logo LGA, Benue State, she says she walked long distances to collect firewood for cooking. She recalls the challenges and safety concerns associated with those journeys.

Her experiences eventually pushed her to search for alternatives.
That search led her into biogas technology, which she first began working with at Baban Wondo in Plateau State.

Today, Atsuku is using her experience and a new documentary to draw attention to clean cooking and the possibility of converting organic waste into useful energy and fertilizer.

The question she raises is simple:
Can communities find practical alternatives to dependence on firewood?
